DEPRESSION

Depression is, along with anxiety & substance use disorder, the most common mental illness. It has a lifetime risk of 12% in men and 25% in women. It carries the highest disease burden of any illness in Australia.

"What is depression like? It's like drowning, except everyone around you is breathing." (Amatenstein, 2019)

It's not the sadness or 'feeling down' that we often have to contend with when things are not going to plan. Its a feeling of having lost your rudder and having no clue when or where you last had it. Its like being in a bottomless pit and having no way out.

It's a medical condition that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act,  combining in a unique way to create a depressed mood.

RELATIONSHIPS

Human beings are social animals and the relationships we cultivate can have a profound effect on our well being. Good relationships are the building blocks on which flourishing futures are built.

If we can increase the positive influence of our relationships, we can increase the positive emotions we experience, regulate our emotions more effectively and become more resilient.

Practices such as kindness, compassion and forgiveness are some of the ways you can develop relationship building skills in themselves. They also help you tap into your true potential.

WELLNESS COACHING

This is described as the art of finding happiness.  Are we looking for happiness in the right places? Do we believe that we have to achieve something before we can be happy? And what happens when we have achieved it and are still not happy? There will always be something else that you want... Happiness is a state of mind, it's got nothing to do with how much you have or how much you have achieved.

It's about setting goals, more intrinsic goals than external ones. Are you interested in interacting with people? It has been shown that connectedness brings joy and happiness. Are you optimistic - do you count your blessings? What is your self-esteem like? Do you believe that you are a good person, competent and deserve to be happy? When you see challenges, are you courageous and have the grit to see it through, knowing that you will figure it out....it's about having a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset

Research shows that building self-efficacy is the pathway to lasting happiness.

Hope in the future is the main takeaway, when there is hope, the possibilities are endless

GRIEF & LOSS

Grief is a broad term used to describe reactions to loss. It encompasses thoughts, feelings, behaviours and physical symptoms that are commonly experienced by people affected by a significant loss. It is a highly individualised experience and no two people will experience it the same way.

A grief response is often used to refer to a grief experience relating to any type of loss. Bereavement, on the other hand, is the experience of a loss due to the death of a loved one.

Grief is complex and multifaceted. An individual's experience and expression of grief is influenced not only by the nature of the loss, but also by personal characteristics such as personality, social and cultural context in which the person is living.

The more recent approaches to grief and loss focus on adjustment and integration.
